How to make New Years resolutions you’ll actually stick to

We’ve all been there, all made the sparkling list of goals that’ll transform us into the people we’ve always wanted to be, stuck it to the fridge and about five days later… forgotten all about it. Yes, unfortunately New Years resolutions are the first thing to go flying out the window once the cool chill of jarring January hits and we’re all just wishing it would end. That’s why this year, here at the Marketplace we’ve compiled a list of ways you can make goals for 2021 and actually stick to them. Don’t believe it’s possible? Try it out for yourselves – you can thank us later!

1. Get SMART

resolution

Before you even think about doing anything else, sit down and figure out the SMART method. This is used by entrepreneurs and CEOs across the globe to make sure they’re setting a list of realistic goals they know they can achieve. Want to know how it works? It’s simple really. Each letter in the acronym stands for an instruction as follows: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-Bound. So now you have the criteria, all that’s left to do is apply it to the list of things you want to achieve in 2021 and hey presto, you’re on your way to becoming your own super human!

2. Create habits

Everything we do in life revolves around the habits we create. Whether that’s what time we wake up, our exercise routines, how we tackle work loads or even our eating patterns. In order to make your resolutions reality, you’re going to need to turn them into daily habits that become second nature. They say it takes seven days to either break old habits or create new ones so stick with it and it’ll soon become a piece of cake.

3. Credit where credit’s due

For this to work, it’s going to be a long, somewhat tiring journey. Changing your ways is no easy feat so the next vital step in the whole process is to be kind to yourselves and give yourself that pat on the back when you need it. Reward progress with positive things that’ll bring you closer to your goals such as a self care night or maybe a new book – try and stay away from the gold old food reward scheme we all love to hate and hate to love. By appreciating how far you’ve come and the fact that you’re actually exercising will power alongside all the other trials the first month of the new year brings, you’ll spur yourself on to see this thing through.

4. Have a little patience

Alright everyone, before this next one lets all take a deep breath and channel your inner zen because you’re not going to like it. Oh yes, our penultimate tip is to sit back and have a little patience. Great things take time and all you want to achieve isn’t going to appear over night. You’re going to need to be patient with yourself and the process in order for changes to be made. Get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and for the time being know when to just inhale through the nose and let it go – you got this so keep pushing forward!

5. Remind yourselves why you started

Finally, it’s so important to have a clear idea in your head as to why you even want to achieve the goals in the first place. Time to whip out that new journal you got for Christmas and do some soul searching. Before you get stuck into working on each resolution you need to write down what it is about that goal that attracts you to it and the impact it’ll have on your life. This step is vital as it’s going to become your saving grace when you encounter times of weakness. It’ll be a guide and a motivator to look back on and read when the going gets tough – a little letter from your past self to your present as to what you need to do to help your future self. Sounds a bit mumbo jumboey but trust us, it works!

Now you’ve been given the tools so get cracking and let us know how you get on in the comments – HAPPY NEW YEAR from all of us at the Biscuit Marketplace!!
