“And Time Stood Still”
City trains and trams have had a place in my heart since I was young – every Christmas I would ask Santa for the Lego City train set. It wasn’t to be, but the vintage trams of Budapest came close to that spot. It’s nice to think of decades of journeys coming to rest in this one spot on a winter’s afternoon.
My camera loved this scene, the warm and gentle palette of yellows and rusts and greys. I had just gotten off the no.19 on my way to find the historic Rudas Baths. Steeped in foggy, warm thermal water, and floating under a Turkish dome, time felt like it stood still and waited for me.

“Tír na gCapall”
Tír na gCapall is Gaelic for ‘land of the horses’, which was where I found myself while out hiking one beautiful Autumn day. These two beautiful white horses ran to the top of the hill to greet me, and if someone had told me they had just arrived from Tír na nOg itself, I would nearly have believed them. Either one of them could have been the white beauty that Niamh rode on to find her love Oisín, or Liath Macha, the great King of Horses ridden by the legendary warrior king, Cúchulainn. Set amongst the ferns, another of Ireland’s magical ancients, I felt transported to a world beyond.

“Perspective”
Every day, almost without fail, these small Cessna airplanes would fly in the airspace over my little coastal cabin, drawing gentle arcs through the sky, practicing patterns and training in circles. They would make for the cliffs, rising up and out over the ocean, and out of view. Seeing them has always helped me think bigger, broader, higher, like I to am caught on the updraft and the sky is truly the limit.

“Crossing Over”
The launch of Ireland’s first and only cable car created a lifeline for Dursey Islanders when it opened in 1969.
The cable car is still operational today, providing safe passage, for natives and tourists alike, over the choppy waters of Dursey Sound. While the car connected islanders in a new way to the goods, services and trade of the mainland, I wonder did its construction also speak to a deeper psychological and societal need at the time – a need to be increasingly connected and counted, as Ireland strove to shake off the shackles of her past, and stride forward into a bright economic future.

“Protection”
This is the 19th century Galley Head lighthouse near Roscarberry in Co. Cork. I’ve always been weak for it! It conveys a steadiness and solidity that draws me in, calming and soothing the various frays and rents that life produces. Understandable perhaps, having withstood the gales and roar of the Atlantic ocean for over 140 years.
I often day dream about and try research the people that worked in these buildings, wonder what a day was made up of, how it must have felt during storm surges and imagine the vibrations of winter storms. To me it feels cosy, but I’m sure I’m overromanticising it! This is long-standing favourite print of mine, as it always both comforts and energizes. I hope this image shines a bright light for you too.

“Hidden Place”
Everyone needs a hiding place sometimes. Ideally, for me, that’s a physical space, some simple, uncomplicated landscape where the mind can clear and there’s space to think and feel. I found that space one day while hiking along the Beara Peninsula. There was a quiet valley, with a silent lake that comforted and reassured in ways that I find only really ancient nature can. And the rock that forms these hills and valleys were laid down about 2.5 million years ago, so it’s definitely a high ranker on the really-old-rock o’meter! I wanted to share this place with you, and while it’s only in 2D, I still hope it brings some small sense of calm and quietude to a special place for you.

“Golden Moment”
Some moments just feel eternal – know what I mean? This was definitely one of them. I remember the feeling of standing on this boardwalk set in the wild serenity of Barleycove Beach in West Cork. The air was warm and thick, the sun, done for the day, was stretching and yawning on the horizon, pushing a last few gentle rays across the sand as it did. Everything felt natural and real and possible and probable. Just as it should. Some good medicine for the mind, body and soul. We need every bit of it.

THE OLD EXCHANGE | Illustration | Digital College | Gicleé Print
“The Old Exchange”
This piece is inspired by Cork City, Ireland, where I lived for many years. I would often sense the clamour and bustle of the historic quaysides on my daily navigations through the city, and imagine the merchants, sailors, workers, and wanderers that would have walked these quays before. The past feels real and relevant through the architecture and function these quaysides retain. To me, they are still the glue of the city, spaces for meeting and exchange, for new ideas and imagination.
Threads of my own personal history are woven through this piece in the mix of ingredients used to create this collage. The yellow and pink textures are from the pages of my favourite storybook as a child, the gull from an old photograph I took, the ship and quay wall snipped from an old book in the local library (don’t worry, not literally!). I hope you enjoy its energy and that it brings a creative burst of colour to your home or office space.
