“the creative mind behind Naoi”
We’ve all heard the phrase, “everything happens for a reason” right? This months’ maker is pretty much the embodiment of that little saying. Let’s get to know here more…
Born in India, the creative has surprisingly set up her roots in Templemore, Tipperary where she lives with her husband and son Daniel. However the road was anything but straight to get to where she’s ended up:
“Almost 20 years ago, I trained to be a doctor in India after deciding to follow in my Dad’s footsteps (actually I didn’t have much of a choice!). After my arranged marriage in 2001 failed miserably, I decided to focus solely on furthering my career which led to me pursuing a post-graduate degree in Clinical Embryology in Australia. I left India in early 2003 and that was the beginning of the most amazing adventure of my life.”
Exploring the world became her new favourite thing as she was given the opportunity to work as an IVF Scientist in UAE, Sweden and back again in Australia. While I was working in Sydney, she got the opportunity to work in Cork and having wanted to experience life in Ireland, she didn’t hesitate to accept the job offer.
It’s here in the story that her true life’s calling comes into play. After meeting her husband and getting married she decided to firmly dig her heels into the Irish soil and start a family. However things didn’t exactly go to plan yet again for the talented creator:
“With infertility over my head combined with long commutes and other personal circumstances, I decided to take a break from the whole IVF scene in mid-2013. It was the right thing to do as exactly a year after that, we found out that we were expecting our precious little Daniel. He came into our lives in December 2014 and since then the time has just flown so quickly. Autism hit us hard as a family in 2017 although we knew early on that might be the case. With a lot happening within our household, I knew for certain that I wouldn’t return to the IVF world so I needed to find something to do that would work around our family’s needs.”
Searching for a new way to keep her mind active, she stumbled upon social media and well, the rest is history. Exposed to an opportunity to further her photography skills she quickly learnt she could make a business from taking beautiful photos:
“One evening, I had this sudden light bulb moment of starting a business that incorporated my photography to include poster prints and image transfers onto other surfaces like wood and glass following which I opened up my Etsy shop. On one of those days of experimenting, I decided to try cutting some llama shapes on copy paper which I then used to decorate a glass jar……that was the start of my love for paper! From then on I needed to find every possible craft that could be done with paper and that’s how the business evolved (and is still continuing to evolve). The essence of Naoi is built on my love of working with paper of different colours and textures and turning them into pieces you can wear or things for everyday use.”
With each creation, Namitha’s vision is becoming more and more clear and she is enjoying the journey of self-discovery and reinvention.
