Mental Health & Art – A Beautiful Friendship

My name is Val and I’m inspired by art. As a child, I was never any good at art. I tried and failed on every occasion, and the teacher certainly wasn’t Bob Ross telling me there are only happy accidents. So, I gave up.

I did however develop a love of photography (pun intended). Coupled with living in beautiful Sligo with its ever-changing light this provided endless inspiration and made me see things rather than just looking at things.

As the years went on the anxiety struck, along with depression and photography didn’t work as well as it used to. I was looking for something else. One day I was documenting an art workshop and I was inspired by listening to the teacher and even more inspired looking at the art the children were producing. When the workshop was over, I went to an art shop and bought some supplies.

When I have a paintbrush in my hand, I’m in a world of my own. The sounds of the brush on the canvas, the smell of the paint, and the joy of not knowing where the painting will go. This is my form of mindfulness, my therapy.

I also joined Bite the Biscuit. It was a leap of faith as I felt I wasn’t worthy but to be in a group of such talented creative people is wonderful. I’m in awe of their beautiful products and I want to showcase some of the art and craft that are made by members of the biscuit tin. Over the course of the coming weeks, I’ll share my top picks with you. I’m sure you’ll love them as much as I do.

Be sure to bookmark the Bite the Biscuit website to keep up to date and check out the wonderful marketplace too.
