Daughters of Ireland T-Shirt
Irish Language Daughters of Ireland t-shirt. Inghinidhe na hÉireann - meaning Daughters of Ireland celebrating Irish women's history and heritage. With respect for our past this t-shirt is organic, fairtrade and sustainably produced.
Inghinidhe na hÉireann founded in 1900 merged into Cumann na mBan in 1914. This design is dedicated to their part in the Celtic revival of language, folklore, poetry and Art, and the events which led to Easter 1916 Rising.
In 2016 I was involved in an exhibition to commemorate the 1916 Rising in Ireland. However, when I researched the women of early 20th century Ireland I felt Inghinidhe na hÉireann and Maude Gonne were forgotten about as she didn't take part in 1916 and Maude was too colourful a character for our history books. Maude Gonne and Alice Milligan had toured the countryside of Ireland with their vivant tableaux, a kind of popup theatre and brought back the old stories of Celtic legends, language and heritage to the people. I choose to use the spiral as it is on the entrance stone of Newgrange, I drew with charcoal as I wanted it to look old and carved. The dots I included from jewellery in the National Museum of Ireland, perfectly round but ancient.
